(3:7-11NIV)
7.
But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of
Christ.
8.
What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the
surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose
sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain
Christ
9.
and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that
comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ – the
righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
10.
I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the
fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
11.
and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.

A study
question for verse 7
Paul transitions his
thoughts in this verse. He now lets us know that all of these things he
used to greatly value (advantages he acquired because of his birth as
well as because of his disciplined hard work) were no longer of any
value to him. Not only that, they were actually liabilities to him. When
we are pursuing and have what the world values (money, good job,
education, health, beauty, home, clothes, cars, etc.,), it is easy to
become self-dependent, which numbs us to our real need. Paul had these
things. He had the status of the world, but said that they were not
gains at all. Instead, they became distractions. All of these things
that our culture so heavily values have the potential to be a liability
to our relationship to Christ and hence actually destroy us. Explain. |
